Switzerland Targets 15% Voluntary Gas Reduction for Winter

The Swiss government is aiming for a voluntary gas consumption reduction during the upcoming winter season in preparation for a potential shortage in Europe, media reports said Wednesday, citing Switzerland's Federal Council.

The goal is to reduce gas demand by 15% from October 2022 until the end of March 2023, compared with the country's average consumption in the past five years. As part of the initiative, the government called on households, industry, the services sector and public organizations to lower building temperatures since heating alone represents about 75% of gas consumption during winter.

Switzerland is also preparing applicable guidance for companies that plan to switch to oil from gas amid risks of higher carbon taxes resulting from the move.
